During the last 5 years a number of studies have taken place evaluating the environmental impact of the key materials used in bottles and jars.
The most recent report by Franklin Associates of the USA compared total energy, solid waste, and greenhouse gas emissions from PET, glass and aluminium containers for soft drinks. The peer reviewed report looked at the life cycle inventory for the 3 packaging materials, from extraction of the raw materials through container fabrication to post-consumer disposal and recycling. Because of the very low energy requirements for the production of PET containers, and their transportation in the supply chain, carbon emission values for PET were significantly lower than for the other materials, especially glass.
